THE GITXSAN
HUWILP GOVERNMENT
The Gitxsan Huwilp Government was created to advocate for our traditional Gitxsan Hereditary system, which has been in place since time immemorial. We reject colonizers’ trespass on our territories and keep sacred our culture, language and traditions.
As true owners of our territories, we share a commitment to ensure our lands remain pristine for generations to come through sustainable development, food security and continued implementation of the decisions of the historic 1997 Delgamuukw case which was a joint lawsuit with the neighbouring Wet’suwet’en and the first comprehensive validation of the Gitxsan Indigenous rights and title of their traditional lands by the Supreme Court of Canada. Simgiigyet also work to protect and heal our people through community engagement on issues like our inherent right to thrive in society by sharing our culture and traditions with our future generations. Currently there are 18,000 people of Gitxsan heritage living around the world.
